Design Process

Birdseye Maple and Rosewood End Table

It all begins with an idea.

The enjoyment resulting from the process of conceptualization, to design, to construction, to project delivery of a custom-made piece of furniture is difficult to equal. The initial discussion between client and craftsman may be vague and lacking specifics such as design style, dimensions, wood species, and finish. Many times, the client expresses general ideas of the end product such as, “ I would like a bed for my master bedroom”. On occasion a client has more specific criteria for the project that might include dimensions, furniture style, wood species, color/finish, special functionality, pictures of an existing piece, or scale drawings.

The iterative design process between craftsman and client is crucial to achieve mutual satisfaction and ultimate success with any custom project. I do not make a product line or inventory of furniture for customers to buy from a showroom, catalog or website. I make custom pieces specifically for each individual client. The furniture a customer wants might look like a previously made piece but it is made just for them to our agreed specifications. Most pieces I make for clients are one of a kind items that match the client’s vision and special needs. The design process can be very time consuming and involve considerable resources therefore the value of this process is included in the project’s final cost.
